From chrysanthemum farms to tech campuses
Sunnyvale had chrysanthemum farms from the 1950s into the 1970s. Today it is one of the core cities of Silicon Valley and is known as the birthplace of the video game industry, as the former home of Atari's headquarters. Companies based there include Fortinet, Juniper Networks, Intuitive Surgical, LinkedIn, Trimble and Matterport, and several aerospace and defense firms operate in the city. The Onizuka Air Force Station, nicknamed the Blue Cube, served as a satellite control facility until 2010 and has since been demolished.
Small businesses here tend to grow with their customers: a machine shop that makes fixtures for a medical device maker, an electrical contractor that wires lab spaces, a restaurant that feeds a campus at lunch.
When a lump sum and a schedule make sense
Term-style funding, in general terms, is one amount repaid over time. It suits purchases where three things are true:
- The cost is one-time, such as a machine, a vehicle or a build-out.
- The thing you buy keeps earning after the payments end, or at least as long as they last.
- You can name how it earns: more output, a new contract, or lower costs.
If any of those is missing, the need is probably working capital rather than a term purchase.
Customer concentration is the real risk
Many Sunnyvale suppliers depend on one or two large accounts. A new machine bought to serve one customer is only as safe as that relationship. Before committing, ask what happens if that customer pauses orders for a quarter. If your other work still covers the payment, the purchase is sound. If not, consider a smaller amount, or wait until a second customer is lined up.
For illustration: a fixture shop buys a second mill
A small Sunnyvale shop that machines test fixtures for two hardware companies is running its single mill around the clock. A second mill and tooling cost $160,000. The owner estimates the added monthly output, subtracts material and an extra operator, and tests the remainder against a payment with the larger customer's orders cut in half. The numbers are only an example, not our terms, rates or typical results.
