A county of small communities
Wikipedia counts 282,424 residents in San Luis Obispo County in 2020 and names the city of San Luis Obispo as the seat. "SLO" is a common shorthand for both county and city, and the page ties it to a relaxed local culture. The mission was founded in 1772, and the city grew around it. The county's communities are small and scattered along beaches, coastal hills and the Santa Lucia range, which supports fishing, agriculture and tourism. Pages here cover San Luis Obispo, Arroyo Grande, Atascadero, Morro Bay, Paso Robles and Pismo Beach.
Four calendars at once
| Source of demand | What the calendar looks like | Who feels it |
|---|---|---|
| California Polytechnic State University (almost 20,000 students) | Term time versus break | Cafes, copy shops, rental housing, bike and board shops |
| Wineries and tourism | Visitor peaks and quiet stretches | Tasting rooms, restaurants, lodging, tour operators |
| Coastal fishing and beaches | Weather and season | Docks, seafood sellers, rental and tackle shops |
| Agriculture | Planting and harvest | Equipment, parts, trucking, labor services |
Wikipedia calls the wine tourism popular and grapes among the county's agricultural products; it gives the student count in the table. The rest of the table is general framing.
The business that depends on a single calendar
A business that depends on one of these calendars is exposed in a way a mixed business is not. A cafe next to a campus has a gap every summer. A tasting room faces a slow stretch after the busy one. A fishing business can lose days to weather. The healthy response is to plan for the thin stretch as part of the business rather than treat it as bad luck. That means knowing how many weeks of costs you need to fund, and what it costs you to fill the gap.
Illustration: a campus-adjacent shop
For illustration only, a bike shop near a campus has $11,000 of monthly fixed costs and sells $34,000 in a school-year month but $9,000 in a summer month. Over three summer months the shortfall on fixed costs alone is about $6,000. If the owner also wants to buy fall inventory before term starts, the cash need goes up. Round numbers, not our terms or a typical outcome. The real question is how much cash you want ready before the next busy stretch begins.
Terms
Our side of the arrangement is simple to state. Funding ranges from $25,000 to $5,000,000 and can be in your account in as little as 24 hours. We consider a FICO of 500 or higher, ask for about three months of business bank statements, and skip the tax returns. The five-minute application uses a soft credit pull, and sole proprietors can apply.
