Business funding in El Dorado County, from Gold Country to Lake Tahoe

From foothill towns on the western slope to the high Sierra at Lake Tahoe, the county's businesses live on different seasons. Here is how to plan for yours.

A county that climbs a mountain range

Wikipedia describes El Dorado County as lying entirely in the Sierra Nevada, from the historic Gold Country in the western foothills to the High Sierra in the east. It had 191,185 people in the 2020 census, with Placerville as the county seat, and is part of the Sacramento metropolitan area. Where the county line crosses US 50 at Clarksville, Sacramento is 15 miles away, and the county's population has grown as Greater Sacramento has expanded toward it. The county is named for the mythical city of gold.

Much of the land is public: the Eldorado National Forest makes up approximately 43 percent of the county's area, and the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit manages much of the land east of the crest. A portion of Folsom Lake sits in the northwest corner and the Pacific Crest Trail runs through the east.

Gold history, modern customers

Wikipedia notes that the Maidu, Nisenan, Washoe and Miwok have lived in the area for thousands of years and that the 1848 discovery that started the California Gold Rush happened in El Dorado County. The history draws visitors, but the everyday customer base for foothill trades is the household: roofers, landscapers, septic and well services, auto repair and local restaurants, who rely on repeat customers within a short drive.

Planning the off-season

  1. List your fixed costs for the slowest eight weeks.
  2. Subtract what you reliably collect in that period.
  3. The remainder is the number to cover, not your average month.

For illustration only, a Tahoe-basin shop with $25,000 of monthly fixed cost and $10,000 of off-season sales has a $15,000 monthly shortfall. Over two months that is about $30,000, in round numbers, and it is bridged with a working-capital decision made before the slow stretch. Not our terms or a typical outcome.

A habit that makes any file clearer

Whichever side of the mountain you operate on, give your statements context. A reviewer reading three months of data for a Tahoe-basin business in the shoulder season will see a different picture from one reading July. A sentence about your seasons on the application removes the guesswork, and it helps you decide how much to request.

Equipment, vehicles and the commute

Because Sacramento is close on the west side of the county, many foothill businesses serve customers across the county line. A plumber, an electrician or a landscaper may drive a long way each day, which makes the truck the business. When a vehicle fails, a week of lost jobs can cost more than the repair. Equipment financing fits a replacement purchase, while working capital fits the bills that pile up around it. Owners in the Tahoe basin face a different version: seasonal staff, snow removal gear and heating costs that run whether or not customers arrive.

What funding looks like

What we offer is the same everywhere in the state: funding from $25,000 to $5,000,000, in as little as 24 hours once approved. We consider FICO scores of 500 and above, ask for about three months of business bank statements, do not require tax returns, and use a soft credit pull on a roughly five-minute application. Sole proprietors can apply.
